[*246] Beginning with this verse and ending with verse 5.1.154.1, ā́vaha devā́n yájamānāya, is a set of pratīkas which are found in TS 2.5.9.1-4. The complete verse is as follows (I have underlined the Sanskrit and English that appears in the VMP text): ágne mahā́ṅ asīty āha mahā́n hy eṣa yad agnír brāhmaṇéty āha brāhmaṇó hy eṣa bhāratéty āhaiṣá hí devébhyo havyáṃ bharati devéddha íty āha devā́ hy etam aindhate mánviddha íty āha mánur hy etam uttaro devébhya aíndhárṣi-ṣṭuta íty āharṣayo hy etam astuvan víprānumadita íty āha (1) víprā hy ete yac chuśruvā́ṃso bráhma-saṃśita ity āha bráhma-saṃśito hy eṣa ghr̥tahavana íty āha ghr̥tāhutír hy asya priyátamā praṇī́r yajñā́nām ity āha praṇī́r hy eṣa yajñānāṃ rathī́r adhvarā́ṇām íty āhaiṣa hí deva-ratho 'tūrto hótéty āha ná hy etaṃ kaścaná (2) tárati tū́rṇir havya-vāḍ ity āha sárvaṃ hy eṣa taraty ā́spā́traṃ juhū́r devā́nām íty āha juhūr hy eṣa devā́nāṃ camasó deva-pā́na íty aha camasó hy eṣa deva-pā́no 'rā́ṃ ivāgne nemír devā́ṃs tvaṃ paribhū́r asī́ty āha devā́n hy eṣa paribhū́r yád brūyā́d ā́ vaha devān devayaté yajamānāyéti bhrā́tr̥vyam asmai (3) janayed ā́ vaha devā́n yájamānāyéty āha yájamānam evaíténa vardhayati... | Keith's translation: “`O Agni, thou art great', he says, for Agni is great. `O Brahman', he says, for he is a Brahman. `O Bhārata', he says, for he bears the sacrifice to the gods. `Kindled by the gods', he says, for the gods kindled him. `Kindled by Manu', he says, for Manu kindled him after the gods. `Praised by the R̥ṣis', he says, for the R̥ṣis praised him. `Rejoiced in by sages', he says, for learned people are sages. `Celebrated by the poets', he says, for learned people are the poets. `Quickened by the holy power (Brahman)', he says, for he is quickened by the holy power (Brahman). `With ghee offering', he says, for ghee is his dearest offering. `Leader of the sacrifices', he says, for
he is the leader of the sacrifices. `Charioteer of the rites', he says, for he is the chariot of the gods. `The Hotr̥ unsurpassed', he says, for no one surpasses him. `Surpassing, bearing the oblation', he says, for he surpasses all. `The mouth dish, the ladle of the gods', he says, for he is the ladle of the gods. `The bowl from which the gods drink', he says, for he is the bowl from which the gods drink. `O Agni, like a felly the spokes, thou dost surround the gods', he says, for he surrounds the gods. If he were to say, `Bring hither the gods to the pious sacrificer', he would produce an enemy for him. `Bring hither the gods to the sacrificer', he says; verily with that he makes the sacrificer to grow great.”
[*247] This verse is in parentheses in the Sanskrit text.
